Smart retries
Scheduling payment retries based on the decline reason, the card type and local timing rather than at fixed intervals.
Smart retries vary the retry schedule by cause. An insufficient-funds decline is worth retrying near a likely payday. An expired card is worth no retries at all until the card is updated. A do-not-honour response often clears on a second attempt hours later.
Fixed schedules ignore all of that and produce two failure modes at once: giving up on recoverable payments and hammering unrecoverable ones.
Inputs worth using are the decline code, the issuing bank’s behaviour, the customer’s local time zone and calendar, and whether an account updater has refreshed the credential since the last attempt.
